I have always wanted to go to college since I was a little kid. So as I got older, I was getting excited and started to look for colleges that interested me. So, when I started talking to my dad about the schools and the cost of school, I was surprised that he was as not as excited as I was. I thought maybe he was not ready for little girl to leave for college but it was the opposite. He sat me down and told me about considering the military as an option.
My mindset was “what the heck?” I never thought about going to the military. I have great respect for the military, but it was not for me. I tried to explain to that to my father instead my dad explained the benefits of the military. The military could provide housing, food and can pay for college while in the military. I understood what my father was saying, but knew the military was not for me. I wanted to continue my education without stopping. Even though the military pay for college, if you are called on duty. Then, you must go serve your country. Also, I couldn’t imagine myself there and there so much structure in the military. My dad for some reason didn’t understand because he was in the military around my age and he loved it. He thought it was a great opportunity. We argued about it and he told me to think about it. I thought about it and even researched it. I had to agree with my dad it was great opportunity for me. I have the chance to travel around the world and they would pay for my college. It would provide everything for me without a single penny from me or my family. I saw the great benefits but had to follow my own dreams. I talked to him about the research and the great opportunities but it was not the right path for me. He was disappointed but he knew he was I not going to change my mind. My dad took a big breath and seemed to accept it but gave me a deal.
His deal was I can go to community college and experienced it for myself. Also, I have to maintain my grades at school. So, I attended Rowan Cabarrus Community College. I was on a mission to prove him wrong about college and that I can make it. It was great experience. It taught me a lot and prepared me for university. I did well at RCCC. I impressed my dad. He later told me, He was proud of me because I went after something that I wanted to do.
Me and my father had different ideas about my career path in life but that didn’t stop me. People are going to criticized you throughout your life but you have to believe in yourself. Don’t stop until you achieve regardless of what people think or say about your dreams.
My Reflection: This I believe was an interesting assignment because I never thought about what I believe in. It made me evaulate my life and truly think about my beliefs. I told a personal story because it was a important part of my life establishing independence from my parents. I like the peer revison that we did in class. It helps to see somebody else point of view and fix some careless mistakes. I forgot to separate my paragrapghs. My peers told me that it made it easier to read my paper. I didnt realize it until my peers brought it until my attention. Also, I didnt have an introduction. My peers was confused because i jumped in the story. I had to realize they do not know my background. Peer revision helped me out a lot in this essay. Also, a good opprtunity to meet our classmates.
